~Pre-war children's fashion was greatly influenced by what adults wore. In other words they dresses like smaller adults.
~ By the 1920's childrens fashion was based more on comfort and the needs of the kids.
~ Wealthy children would be seen wearing fabrics of silk, lace, velvet and muslin on special occasions. The most common fabrics were cotton and wool. They were the most durable material and made for a comfy wear.
Girls:
~ In the 1920's young girls wore loose dresses made of cotton, usually worn with a light cardigan. In the summer they wore canvas shoes which are a very light shoe perfect for summer weather. In the winter the girl's would wear a heavy sailor suit, or a serge skirt usually worn with a sweater and a matching baret. They would have kintted long undergarmets which went underneath and had attachments for holding up long stockings which was very convenient. The preferred hair style was short and usually worn with a ribbon.
Boys:
~ It was very common for boys to wear knee-length trousers year-round which adventually got shorter as the men grew older. In the summer the boy's would wear ankle socks with canvas shoes or sandals and in the winter to keep warm they would wear heavy knitted knee socks. For school they would wear suit-jackets and ties, but they would mostly wear knitted pullovers and cardigans as they were very comfortable and warm.
